Following ESO’s announcement of the Expanding Horizons process to identify its next major ground-based program for the 2040s, the community is organizing to develop the science case and a reference design concept for a next-generation millimeter/submillimeter facility building on the legacy of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). These efforts are coordinated through the ALMA2040 initiative.
Initially launched within Europe, ALMA2040 is now expanding to engage the full international ALMA community in defining a coherent, globally supported concept. Current activities focus on developing a set of scientific and technical White Papers, as well as refining an initial sketch of the core facility concept, driven by the key science requirements for the coming decades.
We invite researchers worldwide to contribute to these efforts and help shape the future of millimeter/submillimeter astronomy.
➡️ Get involved
ESO will issue a Call for Ideas in Q3/2026 with a deadline of 2027 June 1 (and a deadline of 2026 December 1 for Letters of Intent). The ALMA2040 initiative aims to respond to this call.
